Rudraksha Mala

The term Rudraksha refers both to the name given to the necklace (or Mala) made from Rudraksha beads, and also to the actual beads themselves. Rudraksha beads are the seeds from a large evergreen broad-leaved tree of several species of Elaeocarpus.

The seeds are collected and boiled to remove the outer casing. They are then dried and sorted according to their size. Then a tiny hole is drilled through so they can be strung onto the necklace.

This Rudraksha Mala has 108 beads plus one head bead (this is the usual length of such a necklace though it may also be 27+1 or 54+1).

The mala or prayer necklace is used for keeping count during meditation and repetition of mantras, and is similar to a rosary in this sense.

The Rudraksha seeds are also used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Usually a mala is bestowed upon a student by their teacher and certain prayers and rituals undertaken. Due to the reverence held toward the mala it is not to be displayed but worn out of sight and below the clothing (usually around the neck).
